brief synopsis

The Oromo people are the single largest ethnic group in Ethiopia and East Africa, comprising more than 35 percent of Ethiopia's 100 million people. Yet, Oromos have been the object of discriminatory and disproportionate surveillance, policing, prosecution, imprisonment, ethnic cleansing, cultural genocide, and systematic oppression and thousands have been murdered under the guise of security and economic development.

On Monday, June 29th, celebrated artist, courageous activist, and an icon for Oromos everywhere, Haacaluu Hundeessaa, was gunned down in capital city Finfinnee after publicly criticizing Menelik and condemning the oppression of his people, the Oromo people. His assassination has since reignited the Oromo protests all over the world. Since then, countless activists, including American citizens, have been arrested and murdered and many Oromo political leaders have been arbitrarily arrested.

As of October 5, 2020, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's constitutional term as Prime Minister officially expired. Since then, he has been illegally been holding power as prime minister. With his political opposition in prison, Abiy Ahmed's plan is very apparent: to illegally hold power of Ethiopia and become its dictator.

The #OromoProtests fight is not a fight against any human being nor ethnicity. We are only fighting for our basic human rights to be respected and our leaders to be freed. Our movement is against the extreme violence we face in our own homes by the government.

Do not let anyone misconstrue our goal.
We just want Oromia to be free from tyranny and violence.
