The Oromo people are the single largest ethnic group in Ethiopia and East Africa, comprising more than 35 percent of Ethiopia's 100 million people. Yet, Oromos have been the object of discriminatory and disproportionate surveillance, policing, prosecution, imprisonment, ethnic cleansing, cultural genocide, and systematic oppression and thousands have been murdered under the guise of security and economic development.
On Monday, June 29th, celebrated artist, courageous activist, and an icon for Oromos everywhere, Haacaluu Hundeessaa, was gunned down in capital city Finfinnee after publicly criticizing Menelik and condemning the oppression of his people, the Oromo people. Since then, countless activists, including American citizens, have been arrested and murdered. Additionally, the state has shutdown the internet to halt communication and publication of these horrendous acts between protestors and activists.
